High Intensity Use (HIU) is a term used when systems or organisations experience regular and repeated use of their service by a small number of individuals where there is a belief that some of it is avoidable. ’High Intensity’ is the effort we put into others.

Whether it is high use of health services, police forces, ambulance or fire service, social or community care, every area in the UK has a significant and growing challenge. The solution is to provide support through an HIU-type service. The service may be called something other than HIU – frequent attenders, High Impact, positive lives etc – but it’s the approach to changing mindsets and behaviours that is the most important thing.

Founded by Rhian Monteith, High Intensity Use services have been designed and developed with people who have lived experience of accessing healthcare, going to their GP or calling 999 regularly.

As leading provider of HIU training in the UK, we love seeing the difference we make to both people with unmet need and services under pressure. Through our established and highly successful training, mentoring and coaching programme, we find solutions where others aren’t looking; creating sustainable reductions in activity while vulnerable people get better.

Services we have supported see sustained reductions with the HIU cohort of 60-84% in:

• A&E attendances
• Police contacts
• Non-elective hospital admissions
• 999 calls
• Ambulance conveyances
• Primary Care contacts

No service we have supported has seen less than 40% reduction in activity. The return on investment for setting up an HIU service is 300-400%; all by doing the right thing.

Both in the UK and abroad, our work helps providers of HIU services – Acute Trusts, Police Forces, VCSE organisations, GP Practices, Primary Care Networks, 111 and 999 services – to improve client outcomes, efficiency and staff retention.
